RUG CLEANING TERMS AND CONDITIONS
When cleaning rugs, the following defects cannot be ruled out, and the client must take into account that they may occur.
General points applicable to all rug types:
– it is not possible to remove all stains, unpleasant odours and animal hairs
– rugs can give off colour
– hidden defects may be revealed that are difficult to detect on a soiled rug on delivery, such as light scorch marks and other minor mechanical damage
– defects may occur as a result of previous or attempted cleaning
– stains always show up better on clean rugs than on soiled ones
– wax from coloured candles can discolour the rug
– mould stains may not come off
– the edges of the rug may become frayed
– the white fringes of rugs may become greyish or yellowish, and fringes that have become brittle with use may detach
– on rugs that have a glued backing but need to be dry cleaned, the backing may come loose due to the removal of the glue
– the smell of urine and pet odours may become stronger through the cleaning process
Additional points based on the type of rug:
THIN RUGS MADE OF WOOL, COTTON OR OTHER MATERIALS AND RAG RUGS
– may shrink, edges may curl up
– threads may tear if they have been previously damaged through wear and tear
– the connecting threads in cotton rugs may break in the wash if they have become brittle during wear and tear
DOUBLE-SIDED RUGS WITH FRINGES
– can shrink up to 20%
– the rug may lose its shape, start to curl
GLUED BACKING, TAFTING, RUFFLED RUGS
– glued backing base may be detached (especially around the edges)
– the rug can lose its shape
– the glue may continue to fall off after cleaning
– entwined ruffle yarns may start to split at the ends
– it may not be possible to clean the underlayer of high-pile rugs
– stain removal from wool rugs may leave streaks due to the dissolution of the backing glue
– cleaning may dissolve the backing glue and give off an odour of dissolved glue which may take months to disappear
– the viscose elements of a rug on a glued backing may become hard and discoloured depending on the colour of the backing glue
RUBBER-BACKED RUGS
– rubber backing, which has become brittle through wear and tear, may break and detach partially or completely
WOOL RUGS, WOOL RUGS WITH VISCOSE ELEMENTS
– fading, (especially on light-coloured rugs) and yellow spots may not come off
– viscose elements may become hard and yellowish
